Zachary Sullivan covered his reddened face, his eyes brimming with unshed tears.
Amelia Sullivan regarded him with icy detachment.
"Last time, Ethan set you up. The media caught those compromising photos, and the scandal nearly ruined you. If not for your father's intervention, you'd be finished."
"Those old tricks won't work anymore," she said coldly. "Even a pig learns after being fooled a few times."
Seeing the vivid finger marks on her son's face, Amelia softened her tone.
"Darling, I only want what's best for you. Think carefully. Don't disappoint me."
Zachary clenched his teeth, swallowing his rage.
He knew his position depended entirely on his mother's schemes.
"Mom, what should I do?"
Amelia sighed lightly.
"Everyone has a weakness. Ethan used to be untouchable, but now..."
She admired her freshly manicured nails.
"He's handed us the perfect opportunity. We'll strike where it hurts most—his precious niece."
"Emma?" Zachary was stunned. "But she's Father's granddaughter. He'd never allow it."
"Did he allow you to target your brother?"
Zachary fell silent.
"To your father, illegitimate or legitimate—it makes no difference. He only cares about who's fit to inherit the family empire. Men like their wives at home and mistresses on the side. As long as you don't cross the line, he'll turn a blind eye."
Amelia understood men all too well.
"Your father even encourages your petty squabbles—it's his way of selecting the strongest heir. As for Emma? She means nothing to him."
"I am the rightful heir!" Zachary declared instantly.
"Exactly. Emma's well-protected now, but there are always loopholes. Her security comes from Ethan. If something were to happen to him..."
Zachary's eyes gleamed.
"Ethan suffers from neuropathic headaches. If his niece were in danger, he'd lose control. An unstable man can't possibly inherit anything."
Amelia nodded in approval.
"Good. Next month's short track speed skating competition—he never misses those thrilling events."
Understanding dawned on Zachary.
"Accidents happen so easily in such dangerous races. If someone were to collide with him at the rink—"
A cruel smile twisted his lips.
"I'll make sure he becomes a real cripple!"
